Fleet Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have all my vehicles on one policy?

The short answer is “yes”. This saves premium by combining the vehicles and a considerable time saving of dealing with just one renewal. There are also huge flexibility advantages if you choose open driving for business use.

So any driver on an open driving policy or any driver named on the Certificate of Insurance can drive the vehicles. Of course, the driver must have a full licence and not disqualified from driving.

How many vehicles do I need for a fleet insurance policy?

You need a minimum of 3 vehicles to qualify for a fleet insurance policy. These can be a mix of vehicles (e.g. one car, one van and one tipper). The more vehicles you have on the policy, the better the savings.

What type of cover can fleet insurance provide?

Fleet insurance can cover business use, social domestic & pleasure, private hire, courier and haulage (although this list is not exhaustive).

What range of cover does Fleet insurance provide?

You can have third party only, third part fire and theft or fully comprehensive. Your policy can have a mix of these cover types, dependent on the value of your vehicles.

Vehicles include cars, vans, tippers, HGV’s, bikes, buses, coaches, artic and tail lift for fleet cover.

We also have competitive fleet rates for carriage of own goods and goods in transit.

Will I get a no claims bonus on my fleet insurance policy?

No, you don’t get a no claims bonus in the traditional sense with fleet insurance. However the discount for fleet insurance works in a similar way in that an insurer will calculate the rates from a set price but then factor in the age of your business, the value of the vehicles, the age/experience of your drivers, the area you live in, the annual mileage and use of your vehicles and finally the claims you have made on your policy.

It is much more tailored towards your fleet vehicles and claims made and calculated on a case-by-case basis than general insurance. Rates will be cheaper if you have a good (low) claims history.

This is often referred to as a Fleet Insurance bonus as it is the same concept as a no claims bonus and you’ll still get attractive discounts at renewal.

You can transfer across private car no claims bonus for a brand new fleet insurance policy, and this no claims bonus will be reflected in your premiums.

Do I need to own the vehicles?

The vehicles have to be registered to the company for a Business Fleet Insurance policy. A family fleet insurance policy is different in that the vehicles have to be registered to the family members.

What is the difference between ‘any driver’ and ‘named drivers’?

‘Any driver’ policies allow any driver to use your vehicle(s) with permission and named drivers restrict use. You can have a mix of ‘any driver’ and ‘named drivers’ on your vehicles detailed in the policy. This will help keep premiums low, especially restricted people driving on a performance vehicle for example.

What ages are there for drivers on fleet policies?

This is up to you. Some companies opt for over 25 to reduce risk and premium, some name drivers under 25 specifically on the appropriate vehicles. We can adapt the policy to suit your requirements.

How can I save money using Business Fleet Insurance?

Broadly speaking, this can be achieved in 3 ways:

  1. We’ll shop our panel and negotiate on your behalf to get the best rates
  2. We’ll give you tips and best fleet management practice to reduce your premiums (e.g. driver vetting, driver awareness training, restricted use etc)
  3. With our help, you should manage your policy and accident management in a proactive way. For example, costs mount from the day of any accident so we’ll ensure that the accident is reported straight away to the insurer and any replacement vehicle and solicitor costs are minimised by working with the insurers to get your vehicle repaired and any claims settled as soon as possible.

Always contact our claims team immediately or the next working day. We are here 24 hours a day every day of the year.
